New in Confluence: Fit to content for table resizing

Hi everyone,

I'm excited to announce a new table feature in the Confluence Cloud editor: Fit to content.

What it does

"Fit to content" adjusts the overall table width and column widths to better match the content inside your table, all with one click. Select a table and click the Fit to content button in the table toolbar.

How it works

• Draft your table content first, then click "Fit to content" from the table toolbar and the table snaps to fit what's inside.

• You retain full manual resize control from there.

Why we built it

Tables are one of the most-used features in the editor, and we know manually resizing them can be tedious. Many of you have asked for responsive tables (CONFCLOUD-69352), and Fit to content is our response to that feedback.

Note: This is different from Data Center's responsive tables, which was a persistent mode that is enabled before writing. With "Fit to content," you work with your content in place and resize on demand, giving you explicit control over the end result.

This is part of a broader set of table improvements we’re making to make the editor experience better.

Good to know

• Not available for nested tables or tables inside the legacy content macro

• The table will only grow as wide as the browser window

• Fit to content vs. Distribute columns: Use "Distribute columns" when you want even column spacing without changing the table's total width. Use "Fit to content" when you want the table itself and columns to resize based on its contents.

Impact on migrated pages

• Pages auto-converted from legacy but never re-published are automatically fixed. No action needed.

• Pages edited and published after conversion (before this feature launched) will need a manual click of "Fit to content" to adjust sizing.

Great feature! Tables are widely used, and many of our users spend a significant amount of time trying to make them as readable and well-structured as possible.

• Can you Fit to content and then set Fixed column widths so that they stay that width?
• What happens if you already have Fixed column widths on, and then you select Fit to content?

• Can you Fit to content and then set Fixed column widths so that they stay that width?
  • Yes
• What happens if you already have Fixed column widths on, and then you select Fit to content?
  • If a table has fixed column width enabled, you can click fit to content and then columns will be fixed be at their new width after this action. The fixed column setting forces the table to maintain its current column width. Fit to content is an action that modifies the table column widths at a point in time.
