Challenges in filtering non-empty smart link entries in database

Hi All,

I've been facing challenges with filtering entries in my database that contain values in the smart link fields, as I want to exclude any empty ones. Initially, I noticed that filtering for non-empty entries also returns some that appear empty. Upon closer inspection, I found that these cells— which I assumed were empty—actually display a link symbol, but lack a URL. Consequently, they are categorized as non-empty. (This symbol seems to be relatively new to me as it was not present a while ago.)

Entries categorized as empty do not display this symbol.

Has anyone else encountered this issue? Is there a workaround to resolve it, or could this be a bug?

Thank you!

Hey @Emoke Mozesne Csikos thanks for reporting this, I can confirm that this is a bug. I'll raise it with the team so we can get it prioritized. Out of curiosity, did you populate the database by importing a CSV? Just looking to get a clearer sense of how these "non-empty" links could've come about.

Hi @Rachel Li
thanks for getting back to me. Our team has also reached out to Atlassian Support. We have a case going on: ATSD-179.
Yes, this issue emerged after importing a csv file.

Thanks for raising this internally. I would appreciate if it could be fixed within a relatively short timeframe.

This is purely a guess, but my theory is that those are values where someone clicked so that the interface was ready for a link to be added, then navigated to a different value without "deleting" the form control in the original value that was waiting for a link.

Clicking into those values should allow you to click the little 'trash-can' delete icon, after which the system will respect those values as empty and filter out the entries they belong to appropriately.

Hi @Anne Saunders

thanks for sharing your thoughts. I took a look at these cells again and I found that this is the case in all of the entries (more than 700) in my database, and I don't see the trash can icon at the right side when editing (which I do have in user type fields).

@Emoke Mozesne Csikos I had to click into the value, then double click in the form control space within the value to see the delete icon.

@Emoke Mozesne Csikos @Anne Saunders I believe the trash can icon will only show up if multi-select is turned on for the smart link field. Another way to clear the values is to select and right click the cell to open up the contextual menu (see photo).Screenshot 2025-03-20 at 10.51.30 AM.png
