Visibility of public repositories in the private workspace

Mahesh Vecham January 22, 2024

Hi,

If we create a public repo in a public project, it can be found on the web, Even if the Workspace is Private!

Is this a defect on Atlassian Bitbucket system that the checkbox is still editable when the workspace is set to private?

Hi Mahesh,

This is expected behavior. Setting a workspace to private will prevent someone from seeing any public content listed if they enter in their browser's address bar https://bitbucket.org/workspace-id/, where workspace-id is the ID of your workspace.

This setting does not affect the visibility of individual repos. If certain repositories are public, they can still be accessed by anyone who has a link to the repo. A public repo is public to everyone.

If you want to prevent the creation of public repos in your workspace you will need to make all the projects of the workspace private, as public repos cannot be created in private projects.

We have a feature request to disable public access to all projects and repositories at the workspace level: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/BCLOUD-15488 You can add your vote (by selecting the Vote for this issue link) and feedback there if you'd be interested in that feature.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Kind regards,
Theodora
