Migrating Bitbucket 4.10.1 from one Server to another server

Rahul Singhal July 9, 2018

Hi, I am trying to migrate our existing bitbucket 4.10.1 from its existing server (rhel 6.9) to new server (rhel 7.4) we are using psql as database and have installed 5.11.1 on new server.

for moving the data i am following below instructions but these are little confusing. Does anyone have better step by step instructions?

Hi Rahul,

it looks like you're trying to do two changes in one, which is generally not recommended:

  • Migrate to another machine
  • Upgrade Bitbucket Server

You should treat both as separate projects and either upgrade on the existing server and then migrate or the other way round.

Which parts of the instructions are confusing? Do you have any specific questions?

Hi Team,

Thanks for the feedback...we will first migrate to another machine and then plan to upgrade the bitbucket version. we have done the installation of bitbucket same version on new server.

Here is the document which i am following to migrate to another machine -

https://confluence.atlassian.com/bitbucketserver/migrating-bitbucket-server-to-another-server-776640406.html

On step 2 (Move the Bitbucket Server data to a different machine) -

1- Do i need to use Database Migration Wizard in my case? we are using postgres as DB which resides on the same server as bitbucket.

2- If yes, Would Database Migration Wizard just move (cut and paste) the data to new server or it will (copy and paste) ? i do not want to create any issues with current bitbucket server we are moving from.

3- After we click on migrate database, we need to fill the details, in those details for hostname, do we need to put the hostname or fqdn or ip address of new machine ?

On step 3 (Move Bitbucket Server to a different machine) -

1- Do we just need to move application home directory with all its contents to the new server but not the application installation ?

2- do we need to delete the newly installed bitbucket home directory before we extract the backup of home directory here?

3- can you please explain the below statements in the document ? we already have fresh installed bitbucket with the same version. Do we need to follow this step below ?

Set up an instance of Bitbucket Server in the new location by doing one of the following:

  • Make an archive of the old Bitbucket Server installation directory and copy it across to the new machine.
  • Install the same version of Bitbucket Server from scratch on the new machine.

Thank you
