Bitbucket cloud to bitbucket cloud migration

Jasin George September 22, 2025

Hi there,

We are planning to migrate 4 repositories from our bitbucket account to another bitbucket account hosted at customer's end. Could you please help us with the best possible strategy for getting this done.

Welcome @Jasin George

Currently, Bitbucket doesn't have the cloud to cloud migration. Bitbucket Cloud Migraiton Assistant is only available for data center.

Bitbucket native transfer repository option to transfer the ownership of the account to the customer side, would be fine in this case, right?

I would like to know what all will be migrated along with the repo if I choose this option.

Please correct me if my understanding is wrong.

The below items will be migrated along.

Full commit history, code, branches, and tags

Issue tracker contents

Wiki pages

The updated repository URL (it changes to reflect the new workspace or owner)

Stars and watchers

Pull requests, including their history

Everything stays intact under the new owner once the transfer is accepted

What is not transferred

Access groups and permissions are not moved —even if there were access rules in the original workspace. The transferred repo does not inherit the default access settings of the new workspace

Additionally, when transferring to a different type of workspace, workspace variables, Deployment variables tied to Pipelines are not transferred.

Hello @Jasin George

Nothing more to add to this, rather:

When you transfer a repository in Bitbucket Cloud, the following elements are transferred to the new owner or workspace:
  • Repository Data: The core Git repository, including all commits, branches, and tags.
  • Commit History: The complete history of all changes made to the repository.
  • Issue Tracker: If issues are enabled and used within the repository, they will be transferred along with their associated data.
  • Wiki: If a wiki is associated with the repository, it will also be transferred.
Important considerations after a transfer:
  • Repository URL Changes:
Bitbucket automatically updates the repository URL to reflect the new owner's account or workspace name. All local clones of the repository will need to be updated to reference the new URL, or users can re-clone the repository.
  • Access Groups and Permissions:
The transferred repository loses all previously configured access groups and does not inherit the destination account's or workspace's default access groups. You will need to reconfigure permissions and access groups for the repository in its new location.
  • Advanced Configurations:
More advanced configurations like webhooks, CI/CD pipelines, or specific repository settings might require manual re-configuration after the transfer, as they may not automatically transfer.
