New! Change your Team’s avatar color

Hi Community 👋

We’ve made it easier to spot the right team at a glance -  you can now change the color of your Atlassian team’s avatar.

Why this is useful

As organizations grow, many teams end up with similar names or colors. That makes it harder to quickly find or assign the right team in Jira.

Being able to give each team a distinct color helps you:

  • Recognize teams faster when scanning lists and dropdowns

  • Avoid mistakes when assigning work to the wrong team

Where the new avatar color appears

When you change a team’s avatar color, it updates everywhere that team is shown. This works for all teams, including official teams**

**only org admins have permissions to edit official teams

How to change your team’s avatar color

Once the update is available on your site:

  1. Open your team profile.

  2. Go to ‘Team settings’.

  3. Choose a color from the avatar palette and save.

  4. Refresh the team profile page to see the new updated color.

And that’s it - your team’s new color will automatically appear across Atlassian.

I'd like to have custom avatars, upload your own team avatar/emoji/logo/shield/crest...

I agree with @Dave Mathijs - unless there's an option for custom avatars, adding the choice of 8 different colors for hundreds of teams is not helping much.

The intention is good, but as several people have said here already, it is not enough to only have 8 color options. Perhaps this is just the first step, and you will add some icons later, as we have for Goals and Projects?

Color governance time! "Top-level" teams will be red, and we won't use green so we don't confuse any colorblind folks... 🙃

Like others have said, we'll need more customization options for the feature to be truly valuable.

This made me very happy when I found it! :) Probably even more-so than most people since I was not a fan of the color for my primary team's randomized initial selection, ha. So thank you!

@April Chi as others are mentioning a need for custom avatars/icons, maybe some of the newer list sections can show the custom Team banners on hover? That is what happens when you hover on the Team value on a Jira work item and it helps verify that you have the proper team set. But that doesn't happen at https://admin.atlassian.com/o/YourSiteId/teams nor within the Teams app itself for Teams (the Teams app does have hover included within a People search when you are in list view, but not Teams).

I'm sure custom icons would also still be appreciated by people and this suggestion is a little different, but maybe if there are blockers or a desire for the consistent Atlassian color branding/theming in the lists, the existing customized banners being more visible could help and might have a faster path to delivery. Love the color options for now!

That's a cute new feature, however it would be nice to have more customization options for organizations with larger amount of teams 💙

Hey folks! @Dave Mathijs @Ronny Katzenberger @__ Jimi Wikman @Greg D @Brita Moorus ,

Thank you all for all your valuable feedback, appreciate it and keep it coming!

- We've allowed for the customization of team avatar colors as a first step to unblocking some use cases.

- We're open to feedback and may explore custom avatars as a next step if there is enough feedback.

- If you haven't already, can you please vote or comment here if custom avatars is a feature you'd need for your organization - it'd be great if you could explain your use case too: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-94026.

Let me know if you have any further questions/feedback, remember to tag me so I can receive notifications for this

@Greg D Thank you for the positive feedback and the suggestion! Yes, this is the pattern we are looking to adopt i.e. on hover, you should see a team hover card.

We're also looking at introducing preview panels, which keeps you in the context of your current screen and you can view a 'preview' of the team. Example here, we're looking at adopting this for Teams.

I don't have a timeline yet but happy to create a feature request for this if this is something you're interested in so you can follow along the progress :)
