Jira comments, attachments, and remote links available in Analytics and data shares

Hi Community,

We're excited to announce that work item comments, attachments, and remote links are now available in the Atlassian Data Lake, and you’ll be able to query the data in both Analytics and data shares. All three tables will be accessible in:

Using the “Work item comment” table

The “Work item comment” table allows you to collect an overview of data from comments across your Jira spaces. This table stores data on comments, including the comment content, its visibility (in Jira Service Management), and when the comments were created and updated. The comment itself will appear in ADF format, so you'll need to extract the text you want from the JSON string.

Below is an example of how you can use this table:

Comment contributors

In this example, we can see how many comments each person has contributed by using the Comment column from the Work item comment table and Name from the Account table. By changing the aggregation of Comment to Count of unique and ensuring the join path between Work item comment and Account table uses the Authored by column, you’ll be able to see the total number of comments each person has created.

Using the “Work item attachment” table

The “Work item attachment” table contains metadata about attachments added to your Jira spaces, including file name, size (in bytes), and creation date. This table provides visibility into attachments that may be scattered across multiple Jira spaces or work items, all in one chart.

Below is an example of how you can use this table:

Seeing the file size of attachments

To see the total file size of all attachments across your Jira space, use the File name and File size (bytes) columns found in the Work item attachment table. Ensure the File size (bytes) column is set to Total sum to see the total file size of each attachment.

Using the “Work item remote link” table

The “Work item remote link” table allows you to see data on any links that are added as remote links. Remote links are associated with a work item when you select Add or create related work and use one of the following:

  • Link work item

  • Add web link

  • Live doc > Link or create live doc

  • Page > Link or create page

Note that Whiteboard links aren’t included.

There are also custom remote links, which can come from other integrations such as Bitbucket.

This table can give you visibility into how Jira work items connect to external resources, including Confluence pages and other Jira work items in other sites.

Below is an example of how you can use this table:

See how work items link across site remote links

To see how all your Jira work items link across multiple sites and the specific relationship between the work item and its connection, use the Remote link type, Relationship, and Hostname columns in your query and set them to Group.

For more detailed examples of how to see which Confluence pages and Jira work items are connected using work item remote links, check out our knowledge base article.

How can I start using this data?

To access this data in Analytics, all new Data Lake connections that include Jira data will automatically have the new tables available. For any existing Data Lake connection, an organization admin needs to edit the connections. More about editing Data Lake connections.

To access this data in data shares, you won’t need to take any action as the new tables will automatically be added to your existing data shares.
