Did you know Atlassian has a Government Cloud? Here's what it is and why it matters

Hey hey hey Atlassian Community 👋

Most people know Atlassian Cloud. But there's a separate environment that doesn't get talked about nearly enough: Atlassian Government Cloud (AGC).

If you work in or with the U.S. public sector, this is worth understanding.

What is Atlassian Government Cloud?

Atlassian Government Cloud is a dedicated cloud environment built exclusively for U.S. government agencies and their industry partners. It's not just a renamed version of standard Atlassian Cloud, it's a completely separate infrastructure designed from the ground up to meet the compliance and security demands of government work.

AGC operates under FedRAMP Moderate authorization. That's the federal government's standard framework for evaluating, authorizing, and continuously monitoring cloud services.

What that means in practice:

  • Access is restricted to U.S. government agencies and organizations doing government-related work

  • Data residency controls are built in

  • Security standards are verified, not self-reported

  • The environment operates entirely separately from the commercial Atlassian Cloud

How do you get on it?

AGC isn't a self-serve sign-up. Only Atlassian support teams and certified partners can install apps for customers on AGC. If you're eligible and want to get started, you'd reach out to Atlassian Support directly… they can also provide quotes for apps in the environment.

Trials are available, subject to an agreement with Atlassian on how the trial environment will be used.

So which apps actually work there?

This is where a lot of teams hit a wall. Getting your core Atlassian products into AGC is one thing but your workflows depend on the apps around them too. Not every Marketplace app is built to operate within those constraints.

Apps that run on AGC display the Runs on Atlassian Trust Signal, a verification that the app supports data residency controls and operates entirely within the Atlassian Government environment. It's worth knowing what to look for when you're evaluating your stack.

draw.io has been the leading diagramming app for Atlassian teams since 2013. And as of now, it's available on AGC for Confluence Cloud, carrying that Atlassian Trust Signal.

Here's what makes it a good fit for the environment: diagramming tools often need to call out to external services for things like AI features or real-time sync. draw.io on AGC is built so that none of your diagramming data is stored or processed outside your Confluence instance. No cross-domain traffic. No external data processing.

A couple of things worth noting: features that require cross-domain traffic (like the AI diagram generation tool and real-time collaboration) aren't available in this version, because they can't be supported without leaving the secure environment. That's the right call. Collaborative editing still works well though; changes sync for all users almost instantly, and diagrams are saved as Confluence page attachments.

What you do get is the full draw.io feature set: multipage diagrams, layers, placeholders, a wide range of shape libraries (flowcharts, BPMN, UML, AWS, Azure, Cisco, GCP, org charts, floor plans, and more), plus the ability to build and share custom shapes, libraries, and templates across your teams.

The short version: if your team needs to map processes, plan cross-agency initiatives, or document systems and you need to do it inside a FedRAMP-compliant environment, draw.io on AGC covers it

Curious if others here are working in or around AGC environments aaand happy to answer questions or hear what your team's experience has been.
