Visualizing Work Items in Jira Cloud with Charts – A Fast Way to Gain Insights

👋 Introduction

In fast-paced agile teams, visual insights are just as important as work item details. Jira Cloud recently introduced a powerful feature under the All work tab — the ability to view your team’s work items as charts.

This lets you convert filtered work into meaningful visual data without creating custom dashboards or reports. In this article, I’ll walk you through how to use it and give some examples of how your team can benefit.

📊 What is the “View Work Items as a Chart” Feature?

This feature lets you:

  • View your current filtered issues as a bar or pie chart or count

  • Visualize data by issue type, assignee, reporter, status and priority adding any one in the column at a time.

  • Quickly detect bottlenecks, workload imbalance, or status breakdown

It's available under the All work tab in your Jira Cloud project.

🛠️ How to Create a Chart from Work Items

  1. Navigate to your Jira project.

  2. Click on All work from the left sidebar.

  3. Use filters to narrow down the list of work items (e.g., only “In Progress” or “Done”).

  4. Click on More actions (⋯ in the top right).

  5. Choose View work items as a chart.

  6. In the dropdown, choose the column to chart (like “Assignee” or “Status”).

  7. Select the chart type (bar or pie or table).

That’s it! A live chart will now appear based on your selection.

Example Use Cases

  • Workload View: Visualize the number of work items per assignee.

  • Work Mix Analysis: Visualize the distribution of bugs, stories, and tasks to check if too much time is spent on fixes.

  • Team Feedback Loop: Identify which teams or individuals are raising the most issues — useful for cross-team alignment.

  • Priority Health Check: Use “Priority” field to see how many high-priority tasks are active.

  • Status Breakdown: Know how much work is stuck in a particular status.

🏁 Conclusion

The new chart view in the All Work tab is a quick and powerful way to visualize work without diving into full-blown dashboard setups or reports. Whether you're a project manager or a team member, this can help you make better decisions — faster.

👉 Have you used this feature in your project yet? What kind of insights did you discover?

I also like what seems to be a first step in an interesting direction. Alex Ortiz (I would have tagged him, but there are just too many) just made a video recently on this, if you want to see it in action: https://youtu.be/GqmXE7Hmt3c

I second his feedback regarding the limited field support and not (yet) being able to save or share configured reports. But let's see what'll come.
