Still closing sprints manually? Bet you forgot it even this month 🥲

#TGIF, but don’t forget to close your sprints 🤭 Or…. keep reading.

If you’re a PM or Scrum Master, you know the drill. It’s Friday afternoon, the team is wrapping up, and you’re headed for the weekend. But if you forget to hit that "Complete Sprint" button, your Monday morning is already ruined.

I would say on average, manual sprint management adds 20 minutes of "admin tax" every week, not to mention the skewed data.

Here is why this happens and how to automate your way out of it. 👇

The "Monday Morning" Mess

When a sprint isn't closed on time, three things happen:

  • Broken Velocity: Your charts show a "flatline" because the work wasn't technically completed within the timeframe.
  • Backlog Drift: Unfinished items sit in a "zombie state" instead of being moved to the next sprint or the backlog.
  • Daily Chaos: You spend the first 15 minutes of your Monday Daily "cleaning up" the board instead of talking about the work.

The "Missing Feature" Syndrome

As I'm sure you’ve noticed, Atlassian has been adding new needed features, but some "quality of life" basics are still missing. We recently got the request from our customer that perfectly captures the struggle:

The "Zero-Touch" Workflow

The goal is to remove the "human element" from the sprint cycle entirely. Here is the drill I use now:

  1. Set your Start and End dates in your native Sprint settings as usual.

  2. Toggle the "Brain": In your Project Settings, simply select the boards where you want to enable Auto-Start and Auto-Complete.

  3. Smart Roll-over: Any "Incomplete" items are automatically moved to the next planned sprint or backlog based on your preference.

  4. Sync & Relax: The app triggers the sprint transitions exactly on those dates.

The Real ROI

The real win here isn't just the 15 minutes you save on Fridays. It’s the peace of mind. Knowing your reports are being generated accurately in the background while you’re offline is a massive ROI on your focus.

Since this wasn't available natively, we included it in Power Tools for Jira. We basically built it as the "missing settings" menu I always wanted.

If you're tired of the manual "Sprint Cleanup" dance, you can grab the app here.

And because you’re reading this on the Community, here’s a quick "thank you" with a 50% Off code: ORGXMN .

If it saves you even one "Monday morning cleanup" session, it’s already paid for itself.
