How to create FAQs in Confluence đź’ˇ

If your team spends too much time answering the same questions again and again, or is struggling to find answers that should be at their fingertips, then you need FAQs. Whether it’s external-facing to help potential customers and users, or internal-facing to help people within your organisation, FAQs make answering repetitive questions simple, efficient, and a lot less frustrating for all involved. And hosting them in Confluence means it’s central and easy for everyone to find.

You might decide to add an FAQs section to an existing Confluence page, such as a product page or an onboarding page, or you may want to have a separate page for all your regular questions and answers. In either case, here’s how to get the most out of Confluence for your FAQs using both built-in and third-party macros:

Make navigation easy 📍

Finding the answer to a particular question becomes harder the more questions you include in the FAQs, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be thorough. Save time on scrolling endlessly through dozens of questions by dividing them up into topics.

Using Confluence’s built-in functionality, you can add a table of contents at the top of your FAQs (just type /table of contents wherever you want it to appear on your page). This way, when you split up your questions into topics, you can easily navigate to the heading of each section. Consider using dividers to visually separate the topics on the page.

Another way to simplify navigation is by using the Tabs macro by Mosaic for Confluence. Choose from plenty of display options and allow users to flick easily between topics without needing to scroll at all.

Reduce on-page clutter 🧹

FAQs can become visually messy and unclear when lots of answers are displayed all at once. This is where collapsible sections come to the rescue.

Confluence's built-in Expand macro allows you to open and close sections of content by clicking the header.

For more customisation options (like using your brand colours), you can use the Advanced Expand macro included with Mosaic.

Bonus: Link to further resources 📚

When a topic is too broad or too complex to cover in the simple Q&A format of FAQs, you might want to link out to other resources (perhaps a different Confluence page or an external website) for further information.

Links are easy to add in Confluence without any third-party apps, and you can even choose between various ways to display your links, such as embedding them.

However, if you want an even more polished and professional appearance for your links, Mosaic’s Buttons might be the way to go.

To add imagery and extra context to your links, you can use cards. Confluence's built-in cards are a great option for simple use cases, but if you want more options for customisation and layout, Advanced Cards by Mosaic might be a better fit.

Get started with a template 🎉

Building Confluence pages from scratch is easy enough, but you might be glad to know that Mosaic has a ready-to-go, fully customisable template for an FAQ Page that could save you time and energy getting started:

This template features a heading and introduction on a background, followed by the FAQ section with collapsible questions and answers, links to further information presented in eye-catching cards, and a footer with contact information.

Make it your own by changing the imagery and colour palette to fit your branding, and copy the table of FAQs into tabs if you have multiple topics to cover.
