How to Export Full Jira Change History to Excel (Video Guide)

Jira records each change to a work item, including updates to status, assignee, priority, due date, etc. The greatest challenge begins when you are required to export the complete history of the work item to Excel for audits, reports, or retrospectives.

In this short video tutorial, we walk through what is possible with Jira’s native export, its limits, and how to export the complete change history when detailed traceability is required.

Native Jira Export Possibilities: What You Get

With the help of JQL, Jira allows you to filter work items by project, user, date, or status and export the result to Excel (CSV format).

However, this export includes only the latest values of each work item.

It doesn't contain:

  • status history
  • previous assignees
  • field value changes
  • deleted work items

For audits or investigations, this information is often not enough.

Exporting Full Change History to Excel

The video also shows how to export the complete Jira change history using Issue History for Jira app provided by SaaSJet.

After installing this app from the Atlassian Marketplace, you can easily do the following:

  • view every recorded change across selected work items in one view
  • filter by project, updater, or date range
  • choose which fields to include
  • export a structured Excel file where each row represents one change event

This format is suitable for audits, reporting, and detailed analysis. It allows you to see who changed what and when clearly.

Summary

Use Jira’s built-in functionality when you only need to export reports containing the current state of work items.

Use Issue History for Jira app when you need a complete history export and when accuracy, traceability, and audit readiness matter.
