Jira keeps a record of everything. But scrolling through a long history list to find one specific update is, let’s say, at least frustrating. Historian - History Explorer for Jira changes that by turning those changelogs into reports you can actually read. And now, with the new Work Item View tab, finding what you want for a selected work item (issue) got a lot easier.
The Work Item View tab sits right inside your Jira issues Activity section. It gives you a structured way to see what happened, who did it, and when.
The new tab gives you two different views depending on what you need to find.
This view focuses on specific fields. When you open it for the first time, it shows the Assignee and Status fields. But you can select any field you want to track, like story points or custom fields. The best part? Historian remembers what you picked. Next time you open an issue, your preferred view is already there.
It helps you to see only the data you need. Moreover, Field-Based View filters changes by date, user, field, and previous or new values.
This view lets you pick two points in time and see the values side-by-side. It’s like a "then vs. now" snapshot. It only shows timestamps where a change actually happened. This saves you from scrolling through empty dates where nothing changed.
Inside the Work Item View, we added a few features to help you find answers faster:
Diff View: This tool highlights the exact characters or words that changed in long text fields. If someone edited a 500-word description, you don’t have to proofread it. Historian highlights the specific changes for you.
Change Indicators: If you click the change count next to a field, a panel opens up. It shows you exactly how many times that field was updated before, during, or after the dates you selected.
Navigation Arrows: You can jump directly to the next or previous change. It’s a much faster way to traverse a ticket’s lifecycle than manual scrolling.
Work Item View is more than just saving time on daily tasks.
You can see exactly how story points or priorities shifted during a sprint. This makes it easier to talk about scope creep.
It provides a clear, filterable record of every modification. If you need to prove who changed a requirement and when, the data is right there.
By default, everyone can see the tab and export data. But you can use the settings to limit access to specific users if you need to keep things more secure.
Historian is designed to make Jira issue history searchable and useful. We know that native Jira changelogs are optimized for storing data, not for people who need to analyze it. We built this app to bridge that gap.
The app tracks every change on any system or custom field. You can group your reports by issue, user, or date to see patterns in how your team works. We also included a Date Trimmer that lets you narrow your view to a specific timeframe, whether that’s the last hour of a chaotic deployment or the last year of a long-term project.
You can also use the Field-Based View to look across multiple issues at once. For example, you can isolate the "Assignee" field across a whole project to see how work is flowing between team members.
