Hey Atlassian Community! π
At Broken Build, we're constantly innovating to address the core challenges Agile teams face every day. We recently launched Agile Cumulative Flow Charts to help you visualize flow efficiency, and now we're preparing to release another powerful addition to the Agile Reports suite: Agile WIP Charts.
If you've ever struggled to identify which work items are aging out, stalling in bottlenecks, or at risk of missing commitments, this app is built for you.
A WIP aging chart tracks the age of items currently in your workflow - not what's been completed, but what's actively being worked on right now. Unlike cycle time scatterplots that focus on finished work, a WIP Aging chart gives you real-time visibility into how long tasks have been sitting in each stage of your process.
Think of it as your early warning system for detecting flow issues before they escalate.
Tailor the work item aging chart to match your team's unique workflow:
Adjust the timeframe: explore recent activity (for example, the last several sprints) or review any custom date range you need
Choose how aging is displayed: show time spent in hours, days, weeks, bi-weeks, or months, depending on the level of detail your process requires
Focus on the work that matters: filter items by issue type, epics, releases, assignees, or refine the view further using your own JQL queries
These options let you tailor the aging chart to your workflow, making it easy to focus on the exact parts of your process that matter.
Every dot on the chart sits within a percentile band that compares current work against your historical performance:
π’ Green (<50%): Item is aging faster than at least half your historical work - on track
π‘ Amber (50β85%): Item is older than most - attention needed
π΄ Red (>85%): Item exceeds the 85th percentile - at risk of missing SLA or commitments
These visual cues make it effortless to spot outliers during stand-ups, retrospectives, or stakeholder reviews.
Whether you're tracking a single sprint or monitoring cross-project initiatives, the chart adapts to your context.
Agile WIP Charts app supports:
Single or multiple Scrum/Kanban boards
Project-level and release-level tracking
Custom filters and JQL for advanced segmentation
...and more features to come!
Stop Firefighting. Start Preventing.
The WIP Aging chart transforms how you manage work in progress:
π― Proactive risk management - identify items exceeding service level expectations before they become emergencies
β‘ Smarter daily stand-ups - prioritize conversations around the work that matters most - your oldest, riskiest items
π§ Bottleneck detection made visual - see exactly where work stalls and which stages need attention
π Data-driven team agreements - align everyone on what "too old" means with percentile-based policies backed by your own historical data
The result? Fewer missed commitments, faster flow, and teams that can actually see problems coming.
We're putting the final touches on the Agile WIP Charts app and will be releasing it soon. Want to be the first to know when it goes live or have questions about how it can help your team?
