AgileTest: A Competitive Alternative to TestRail Test Management Tool

Hi guys! I'm Kayson from AgileTest

The TestRail Test Management Tool is widely recognized for its test case management, execution, and reporting features. For teams seeking a feature-rich alternative, AgileTest presents a competitive option.

In this article, we’ll compare AgileTest App and TestRail Test Management Tool across key areas, including test case management, execution, reporting, and pricing, to help you decide which tool best fits your needs.

1. Manage Test Cases

AgileTest

In AgileTest, the flow of test case generation is a smooth process:

  • You first create are requirement and fill details in the description section.
  • From there, you can create test cases directly based on requirement details, either manually or by using the AI Test Case Generator. Regardless of the method, all test cases are automatically linked to their corresponding Jira requirement.

→ This process eliminates the need for manual test case–requirement linking while ensuring full traceability throughout these test items.

When you have been working on a huge number of requirements, it is easy to get overburdened by hundreds of test cases. To avoid this, you can create test folders. This feature helps you group and organize related cases together in a structured hierarchy.

→ These folders also make it easier to select and execute an entire group of test cases later.

In each test case, detailed test steps, sample data, and expected results are displayed separately.

→  It is straightforward for users to understand which steps to perform, what input data to use, and what the outcome should be.

TestRail

In TestRail, there is no Requirement section. In case you want to track the traceability of test cases, you have to manually enter the Jira key in the Reference field.

→ At this point, maintaining requirement–test case traceability in TestRail relies heavily on manual effort. Since TestRail operates on its platform, users must switch between apps to track Jira requirements and TestRail-associated test cases.

In TestRail, the Test Section works as the Test Folder. You can make use of this feature to create and manage groups of test cases.

→ At this level, both AgileTest and TestRail provide equally effective ways to organize, manage, and execute groups of related test cases.

In TestRail, test steps and test data are documented in bulk rather than as separate fields. Testers list all execution steps in a single Steps section, with any required input data embedded directly within the step descriptions. Expected results are also captured as a single consolidated block, instead of being mapped to individual steps.

→ TestRail displaying all test steps and results in bulk is simple and linear. However, it may make the information less clear than AgileTest’s step-by-step separation of steps, data, and expected results.

⇒ In practice, AgileTest focuses on reducing manual effort and improving traceability, while TestRail may require you to organize test cases manually and follow bulk-style test documentation.

2. Execute Test Cases

AgileTest

In AgileTest, you can create test plans as a collection of test cases and test executions. You can select an entire folder of test cases or choose specific ones for a test execution. This approach ensures that no related test cases are missed in the process.

→ This approach allows you to plan your test process more effectively, keeping track of the exact number of test cases to execute and the corresponding test executions for each project.

You can rerun previously executed test cases with a specific test status. For example, you can create a new test execution that includes all failed test cases from the last run.

→ This feature provides greater convenience and flexibility, allowing you to easily choose which test cases to rerun based on their status.

TestRail

In TestRail, the Test Plan feature helps you manage test runs similarly to AgileTest’s feature. You can also rerun test cases with a specific status based on your selections.

⇒ Both AgileTest and TestRail perform well in the test execution area.AgileTest offers slightly more organizational flexibility with its folder-based structure, making it easier to manage large sets of test cases. TestRail, on the other hand, provides an effective approach to managing test runs and reruns, making it a good choice for teams who value straightforward execution tracking.

3. Report Test Results

AgileTest

AgileTest offers three main types of reports:

  • Test Coverage: provides an overview of how well the test cases cover the defined requirements. It shows which requirements have been tested, which are not, and which may need further testing.
  • Test Traceability: tracks the relationships between requirements, test cases, test plans, test executions, and defects. It provides a clear view of which test cases correspond to specific requirements and whether they pass or fail.
  • Defect Summary: provides a summary of defects found during testing. It includes details about defect severity, status, and the number of defects found in each test run or test execution.

→ AgileTest provides three core reports, which offer an end-to-end view of the testing process. This focused set of reports ensures full traceability, making it easier for teams to track testing progress, identify gaps, and gather actionable insights quickly.

TestRail

In TestRail, reports are divided into 5 main groups:

  • Case Reports: focus on test cases and their statuses, providing insights into the coverage, execution, and results of specific test cases.
  • Defect Reports: summarize the defects found during testing, tracking their status, severity, and progress in resolving issues.
  • Result Reports: display the comparison results of tests, helping teams understand pass/fail rates, trends, and areas that may require further attention.
  • Summary Reports: provide a high-level overview of test progress and status, in milestones, plan, projects, and even test runs.
  • Workload Summary Reports: provide insights into the distribution of tasks and the workload assigned to individual team members, helping to manage resources efficiently.

→ TestRail offers a wider variety of report groups. This broader range of reports provides teams with detailed insights into test case execution, defect tracking, and overall resource management. TestRail’s extensive reporting features are ideal for teams that need comprehensive oversight of testing progress, defects, and workload distribution.

⇒ AgileTest offers a simpler, focused set of reports that provide clear traceability and make tracking test progress easy. TestRail, with its broader range of reports, delivers more detailed insights, making it ideal for larger teams or complex projects that need deeper tracking across multiple testing aspects.

4. AI Capabilities

AgileTest

The AgileTest AI Generator is designed to create detailed test cases directly from Jira requirement descriptions. If Jira tickets contain sufficient details, the AI automatically generates the corresponding test cases, reducing much of your effort in test preparation.

⇒ Both AgileTest and TestRail offer effective AI Generators for test case creation. AgileTest’s AI works well with Jira requirements, generating test cases when sufficient description details are provided. TestRail’s AI may require you to provide more detailed manual input, but it also comes with sharp output. While both tools automate test creation, AgileTest provides a simpler integration with Jira, while TestRail offers more flexibility for teams with detailed requirements.

5. Jira Integration

AgileTest

AgileTest is a Jira plugin for test management that integrates with the Jira workflow. Teams can centralize and manage all test data in Jira. Beginners can quickly learn AgileTest features due to this native integration, reducing the learning curve.

→ AgileTest makes it much easier to track issues, requirements, and test cases in one place. Also, since all data is stored in Jira, it helps you reduce the risks of data silos.
