Parallel Sprint feature in Jira Agile - What does it fix and when will it be released officially?

Hi,

I have recently noticed that within the Jira Agile Lab there is a Parallel sprint feature which can be enabled.

I am interested to know the problem this feature resolves/adds?

...and when it is likely to make its way into an official release?

The reason I ask is because it states on https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/AGILE/Using+Plan+Mode it is not possible to have multiple sprints running against the same backlog although from reading a number of responses across the community there are ways to do this now.
