good thought, we get new books, new pens from family friends and before starting to go school, our parents take us to Basara (temple for worship) for Saraswati Matha (godessess of Knowledge)  near to Hyderabad, Telangana, India. picture as below::-

Its a custom we follow even for my children, there we get lot of gifts from other devoties and we gift to other devoties (ex:- pencils, pens, books and stationary etc.,).
