Throwback Thursday: Back to school memories #TBT

It's Thursday!
giphy
My wife´s grandmother was from Germany. I guess they had a tradition of making these paper "cones" for the first ever day at school for their kids. It would be filled with candy, little gifts, fruits, and all kinds of goodies. Well, our oldest son got the same treatment :) Here is a picture of the cone my wife made him. He is pretty stoked! His younger sister with him on the picture.

Hello KGM,

What a beautiful tradition! The cone your wife made is so thoughtful—I can just imagine your son’s excitement as he explored all the goodies inside. It’s these little gestures that make school days so memorable.

Thinking back to my own school days, The first day was always such a big deal.

I loved the thrill of picking out a new backpack; it felt like it had endless possibilities, it was like my little toolkit for conquering the school year. I even remember the thrill of picking out new stationery, especially the smell of fresh notebooks and the feel of a brand-new pencil in my hand.

Walking into school that first day always felt like stepping into a new adventure—who would be in my class, what new things would I learn, and of course, where I’d get to sit. I can still recall the nervous excitement of meeting new teachers and catching up with friends after the summer break.

Here’s hoping your son’s first day was just as memorable, and that this school year is full of great moments for both your kids.

Let’s make this Thursday a fantastic one!

Thanks,
Shreeja J

Great picture. Like @Shreeja J - I was also thrilled to pick a new backpack and school supplies. I miss those days.

Indeed, the cones (Schultüten) were packed with school supplies and gifts, and were a must-have. Every child had one. The photographer had their work cut out for them, trying to capture all the faces in the photo instead of the cones. :-) School was the best time in life, second only to university, of course.

Hi @Kristján Geir Mathiesen again a nice #TBT topic.

I remember being very worried and nervous going from elementary to to middle/high school and going from high school to college. Those first days/weeks I wasn't very comfortable, leaving old friends, meeting new friends, new teachers, etc.

Man alive if that was your son's cone for Back to School I can't imagine what the trick or treat container will be in October!

New school supplies were always the best feeling leading up to school, then once I walked in through the school doors the feeling was gone. But the memories still live on! Wearing new clothes, getting out of the house, and just a different kind of energy in the environment also helped!

Like @Dave Mathijs  - I was always nervous every year starting school. I knew I would know most if not all of the kids who would be in my class at my school, but was anxious nonetheless. I was very shy back in those days but would get settled in for the most part after about a month into classes.

I am from the days where you didn't know what supplies you needed until you went to school on the first day (other than the paper to right the list down on).

My main elementary school memories are:

  • Picking out which new clothes to wear the first day.
  • My mom taking a picture of each of us.
  • The teacher carefully arranging everyone in columns in alphabetical order and then having to change it to move me from the back row to the front row so that I could see the board. 👓

Oh the days of the hour long busride to school.  We were usually the first ones on and the last ones off.  Time to catch an extra bit of sleep, or work on the homework on the way home to get it done.

What a wonderful tradition and way to get the kiddos excited about going back to school. I would be pretty willing if there was a Milka bar involved, especially the one with the marzipan.

I was always nervous to start school because a lot of the time it was a new school for me either at a new AF Base or going to a different grade, which required going to a new school. I'll pass on writing too much about it because I can't remember many good first day's of school I had.

Hello everyone

It may seem silly but what I remember most was the excitement of coming back and wearing my new backpack that they always bought me in another country where we went on vacation and I knew that no one would have one like mine, in that aspect I was always very vain and flirtatious, but I admit that I was very excited to wear it.

Happy Thursday everyone

Regards

@Kristján Geir Mathiesen I never knew what the cones were for, I wasn't aware of this tradition. Now this PLAYMOBIL set I got for my kids when they were younger makes much more sense to me.

I love that tradition!

My most memorable first-day-of-school memories are those from when I was the teacher since they're much more recent, haha! It was always hard to balance the excitement of the first day for my own kiddos at home, alongside the hectic first day(s) - weeks? - of school as a teacher.

I'm grateful that I can enjoy those first days a bit more with my own kiddos! Plus, I get to celebrate being back in a routine.

I loved school as a child, and it was always exciting to see who was in your class that year. Now, my kids simply text all their friends when they find out.

In elementary school I was so nervous about the first day of school that I'd get ready early the night before by eating a healthy dinner, taking a bath, laying out my clothes for the first day of school and going to sleep early. After the lights went out, I'd wait 10-15 minutes and get up and put on my new clothes and sleep in them. I was so nervous about oversleeping and not having time to get dressed in the morning my mother would always be shocked at how quickly I was ready that first morning of school.

As a kid I loved picking out new school supplies and hearing how everyone's summer vacation had been.

Our kids have a welcome back party at their school on the first day of the new school year, just music and fun for 1 hour before they all head of to their new class.

Great question @Kristján Geir Mathiesen

Wow, what an amazing tradition! Every child would be just super excited to explore all the goodies and sweets in the cone.

For me, the back to school 1st day was full of emotions in the junior school. After a long summer break (typically 2-3 months), we had to go back to school, which was always a reason for a little frown. But one of the best parts was all the new things: bag, bottle, new uniform (our school dress), new stationery, and more.

Myself, I always had to be dragged back to school kicking and screaming.

My kids, each got a brand new backpack, that I got from a conference the previous spring.  sooo many IBM backpacks.

I love tradition! I knew about this because one of my friends is from Germany, and she talked about it.
