Why are local volume links no longer clickable in Trello?

James Sims-Williams October 2, 2024

My team and I have been using Trello with the same workflow for quite a while. It involves adding a link to a local volume in the comments. These have always been blue and clickable but have recently stopped being clickable and are now just grey text like a normal comment.

Has anyone else noticed this behaviour? Is it a bug? Is there a fix?

I'll comment an image for reference.

Hi @James Sims-Williams! This is Sal from the Trello team. Due to the recent changes we've implemented to improve the card back experience on our backend, we decided that we are no longer supporting local link files (file:///) on cards' descriptions and comments. I recently talked with our team if there was a way to revert this specific change, but due to technical constraints and complexity, we won't be able to revert it.

For this reason, we've created a feature suggestion to add this functionality back to Trello. This way, we can gauge the number of users interested in this functionality, helping our engineering and product teams better understand which functionalities our users want to see on Trello.

You can access the new feature suggestion here: TRELLO-677 – As a Trello user, I'd like to add local file links (file:///) as hyperlinks on cards' descriptions.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience, James.

Hey Sal, thanks for the quick response and explanation. It seems like a shame this feature has been removed, as it's really useful for linking big files stored on network drives and was pretty crucial to our current workflow with Trello. I'm sure plenty of people will be finding this an issue! Is there a way of me indicating my interest on the feature suggestion page?

Thanks!

Please see issue below with non-clickable links. These used to be clickable.Screenshot 2024-10-02 at 14.51.44.png
