As workspace/board admin I cannot access the board/workspace

Tamsin Jones August 9, 2024

Hi, this is a convoluted one so bear with me. I am the admin of a workspace (2nd ws) in Trello, which I must have setup using the same email as my original Trello account in a different workspace (1st ws). When I try and login to the 2nd ws using the password it just says its the wrong password until I enter the password for the 1st ws, at which point it logs me into the 1st ws.

I am a guest user in the 2nd ws using the logon for the 1st ws, When I submit a request as the user from the 1st ws to the 2nd ws admin (which is me) to join the space, I receive the request to my email address, but when I click the link to approve the request I get an error message asking me to contact the admin (which is me), which doesn't help as I get stuck in the same loop again.

Can anyone out there offer any advice on how to unpick this one? thankyou in advance!

Hi @Tamsin Jones That sounds confusing, but I think I can help!

I'd start by logging in to Trello and checking your personal account settings. Make sure there's only one account associated with your email address.

Then, I'd go to your workspace settings and reset the admin password. Here's how to recover a Trello account.

Once the password is reset, log out of Trello completely then try logging back in with your email and the new password.

If this still doesn't work, you could try creating a second email address, then invite that account to whichever workspace you have access to. Then, open up a different browser, and log in to Trello with that second email address.

Have your original account make the second email address the admin of the first workspace. Then you would theoretically have two different users in two different workspaces.

Hi Josh, thanks for your reply!

Just started working through the steps to see if I can resolve the issue, but got stuck on the first bit - where in the personal account settings should I be able to see the accounts associated with my email address?

Hi @Tamsin Jones sorry, I may have mis-spoke previously. Let's start over.

So with your Atlassian account, you should be able to join as many Trello workspaces as you want. There should only be one login for that account, which can then change workspaces within Trello.

So if I were you, I would start by logging in to Trello and check to see which workspaces you're part of.

Click on your profile icon within Trello, then select Activity:

From there, you'll see a list of workspaces. Remove yourself from whichever workspace you have two accounts associated with using the same email address.

Clicking on the name of each workspace should allow you to access it without issue. If you can't, you could try this instead:

Create a new email address (or use an existing one you have access to) and then create an Atlassian account for that email address.

Invite that account to the second workspace and make it an admin.

Then, have your main account leave that workspace so it's only associated with one workspace.

Then, just make sure both accounts have no problem accessing their primary workspace.

From the second account, invite your main account to re-join that second workspace and see if you have any problems.

If not, just remove that newly created account and proceed as normal.

Here's how to change the email address associated with an account.

Alternative: If none of the above works, I would clear your cache + cookies and try logging in again to see if that fixes everything.
