Emmanuel Katto Dubai : How to Automate Trello for Beginners – Practical Examples to Get You Started

Emmanuel November 13, 2024

Hey everyone, I'm Emmanuel Katto from Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), If you're new to Trello and looking to get started with automating your boards, I wanted to share a few simple automation examples that I’ve found helpful. Whether you're just beginning with Trello or you're interested in streamlining your workflows, these can serve as a good starting point. I’ve put together a short guide to walk through how I personally automate tasks in Trello, including practical examples you can try out on your own boards. Here are a few examples I use: Automatically move cards to a new list when the due date is approaching. Set up card due date reminders or automatic checklists for recurring tasks. Create automated task assignments based on board activity. These are just a few ideas, but the possibilities with Trello automation (via Butler or other tools) are vast! I’d also love to hear from others who are experienced with Trello automation. So, here’s what I’d like to ask the group: What are some automation tricks or tips you’ve found useful in Trello? Any recommended resources, tutorials, or tools to level up my automation skills? For beginners, what’s the easiest way to start automating tasks effectively without getting overwhelmed? Looking forward to your suggestions and learning from your experiences!

Thanks!

Regards

I'm a newbie to Trello, but I would love to hear what can be achieved with automations.

Thanks @Sarp Egemen for the kind remark.  I'll give me few tips:

  1. Don't over-automate!  Just because you can, doesn't mean you should!
    1. Use automation to genuinely enhance your day, too much automation can have the opposite effect for users.
    2. Don't let automations control the board.  A quick fire way of undoing all that is great about Trello is to use automation to create the kind of controls that make people love Trello and hate other tools.  "Just enough" should be the motto here...
  2. Regardless of level, I honestly think all automation fans should subscribe to my Trello bestie @Brittany Joiner Youtube channel.   Britt's ability to explain and demonstrate things so anyone can follow,  combined with an infections passion and enthusiasm for all things Trello is a winning formula
  3. Follow that with joining Trello Trailblazers Atlassian community, the only community dedicated entirely to Trello
  4. Use automation variables - This help page has all of the automation variables that can transform your automations.  Some of my favourites are
  5. In fact, on top of the above, use all the automation help pages, they are really really useful
  6. I've written some Articles on the community and most of them are for automation, take a look and follow along with some of the cool things I have done with automation. Mikes Trello Tips
