Jason M. Lemkin recently spoke about common startup mistakes on a podcast.

While listening, it became clear that building in the Atlassian marketplace automatically forced us to consider and mitigate 5 of those.

5 mistakes to avoid

💵 Mispricing your product: The Atlassian marketplace (for better or worse) forces you into a simple per-user pricing model. And other apps and the Atlassian products serve as price anchors. It's hard to screw up pricing.

🤝 Working with partners too late: Atlassian has a fast network of partners you can leverage. Enhance a partner's ability to solve client problems, and you'll make the short list.

🌍 Waiting too long to go international: Selling on its marketplace means you're selling globally from day one. Because of that, it forces you to start planning for that international audience early on.

👨‍💼 Waiting too long to go up-market: Atlassian serves a wide array of customers, ranging from small startups to Fortune 500 giants. You'll quickly be pulled up-market. Finding the right balance is the hard part.

🎧 Lack of focus: You are building for a niche. It might seem limiting at first, but really is a benefit. Your target audience is well-defined and specific—it consists exclusively of Atlassian product users. Released (released.so) customers love that focus.
