external diff #LOCAL is showing \\.\nul

Using version 1.2.3.0 (windows 8)

I am trying to setup an external diff to show directory/file changes between two commits. With WinMerge (and others), the left side ($LOCAL) is coming up as:

\\.\nul

Any thoughts here?
