best option for exporting Jira server projects and importing into Jira Data Center

Marc Thompson December 19, 2023

We have a partner that has multiple Jira server projects that we would like to migrate to our Jira Data Center instance. Since neither Project Configurator or Configuration Manager for Jira are no longer available for Jira server, is our only option using a backup from the source server instance and importing into Data Center?

Hi @Marc Thompson ,

Considering this situation, here are the options available for migrating multiple Jira server projects to your Jira Data Center instance:

  • CSV Import/Export:
Utilize CSV import/export functionalities provided by Jira to transfer project data. Export data from the source projects into CSV files and then import them into your Jira Data Center instance. This method is suitable for basic data migration but might not cover all aspects of a project, especially configurations and workflows.

  • Staging Instance with DC License:
  1. Set Up Staging Instance: Create a staging instance of Jira Data Center and apply the Data Center license to ensure compatibility and testing.
  2. Create Backups in Production Jira Server: Generate XML backups of the entire Jira Server instance that you intend to migrate.
  3. Restore/Import Backup into Staging Jira DC: Restore or import the backup into the staging Jira Data Center instance to replicate the production environment for testing purposes.
  4. Install Plugin in Staging:  install Project Configurator or Configuration Manager for Jira in staging Jira Data Center instance
  5. Create Snapshots for Projects: create snapshots or export configurations for the specific projects you intend to migrate.
  6. Import Snapshots into Target Data Center Instance: Import the snapshots from the staging instance into the target Jira Data Center instance where you want to migrate the projects.

It's important to thoroughly plan, test, and validate the migration process on staging environment before performing it in a production environment. Always create backups, especially when performing migrations that involve critical data, to ensure that any unexpected issues can be resolved without impacting live data.

Also, if you feel my input help you please accept the answer.

As long as we can in fact get and use DC & CMJ trial or developer licenses for the staging server and successfully create project snapshots, we are will purchase a CMJ license for our target DC instance?

Thanks for the quick response @BHUSHAN PATIL greatly appreciated!

Hi @Marc Thompson ,

Absolutely, you can utilize trial licenses for both Jira DC and the CMJ plugin on your staging server to create project snapshots successfully. The trials will give you a comprehensive understanding before making the investment.

Bhushan
