How to understand team member utilization in Capacity Tracker?

Charu Sharma September 20, 2018

Capacity Tracker shows capacity of each team member added for a sprint, however it shows utilization based on 'assignee" of a task.

A JIRA has to go through several assignees (Dev + Code reviewer + Tester + UAT + Release etc), so if there are 3 JIRAs of a sprint with current assignee as Tester, bcz its in testing stage, then it shows Original estimate of that task against that assignee (tester); which is incorrect info, bcz original estimate of those 3 tasks may sum up to be a lot more than Testers capacity.

So effort utilization/allotment it shows is incorrect.

Please help me use it effectively.

Hi Charu,

Sorry for the late reply, do not hesitate to contact us on our support portal if you need a timely answer.

We made Capacity tracker to take advantage of the Stories and Subtasks. Therefore you can crate subtasks for each team member corresponding to everyone of their work items within that story.

Say you have a story named "Make Data Grid" you can assign this story to each assignee in time for their turn.

  1. Dev
  2. Code Reviewer
  3. UAT
  4. Release.

Now within the Story, during your planning, you will create sub tasks with time estimates for each individual.

  • Dev - Implement the data grid
  • Code reviewer - Review Data Grid Code
  • UAT - Test Data Grid
  • Release - Deploy Data Grid Changes to EMEA Production

This is an example but each user could have multiple subtasks with different estimates.

We hope this is clear.

Regards,

The Inprowiser Team.
