difference between move issues and transition issues permission

Sherry M Rodulfo November 13, 2019

very straight-forward question...

I need to know the difference because I need to "move" or "transition" a little less than 200 issues to "Rejected" status. With this, I need to have a person be part of the group who does move or transition.

Hello @Sherry M Rodulfo ,

Move Issue: This operation means you can change the project and issue type (either of the two or both) of issue.

Now, let' say the issue is currently in 'Open' Status. If the project/issuetype to which you are moving the issue to, has a workflow which contains the status- 'Open', it will be automatically be moved to the target project/issuetype  in the Open state itself, without any intervention. If the target project/issuetype has a workflow where 'Open' status is not present, ONLY THEN it will ask you to choose a status.

Move Issue Permission: If you have this permission, you will be able to view the Move option from More button, else the option will be hidden.

Transition Issue: This operation means you can change the status of issue and perform the transitions available in the attached workflow.

Transition Issue Permission: f you have this permission, you will be able to view the Transition buttons on View Issue Screen, else the buttons will be hidden.

For your task, you need to perform a Bulk Operation: Transition Issues, and for that you need Transition Issue permission.

Kindly let me know if you need further information.

HI @Sherry M Rodulfo

Actually,  the difference is ..use move issue whenever you want to move it from one project to another (here you can change the project, workflow status) or one workflow to another and transition issue whenever you want to change the issue status within the same project.

For more details please have a look at the below Atlassian article.

move issues --- workflow status

transition issues --- change the issue status

aren't they the same?

Issue status is nothing but the workflow status only but while moving issue we have an option to choose and change the status of an issue from one workflow to another (One project workflow to another so here workflow status changed) but in transition issue ...we don't have option to choose another workflow status.(here issue status within the same workflow of a project)
