Make field values mirror between parent and child tickets

Hello - is there a way to make field values between a parent story and it's subtasks mirror each other?

For example, if I change a field value in the parent, i was the subtask's field to match the same value. Same for if a field value is changed in a subtask - it should copy to the parent.

I have an automation set up that does that, but I have to enumerate every field in the tickets that I want copied. Is there no way to set this up so that it changes to ANY field will be copied? This current set up will be hard to maintain in the future if we ever change anything about the fields we are using.

Jira Automation would be the way to accomplish what you want here. There no other native "field mirroring" capability that I'm aware of.

An alternative to all this copying of fields would be to eliminate the redundancy altogether:

  • Remove the redundant fields from the Subtasks by creating a separate Screen for them, and customize that screen to not show those fields.
  • That will force people to go to the parent issue in order to see and change that information. Yes, it's another click. But you avoid all this automation complexity.
  • Another advantage is that your subtasks will be so much simpler, with far fewer fields.
