Jira created a user that I cannot get rid of

When I imported an external project, all the issues went to the proper jira accounts except one. For this one it created an account with the exact same user name as an account we already have. It is impossible to distinguish between the two accounts when assigning new issues. I cannot delete this account because there are too many closed issues assigned to it and I cannot change its user name because that field is greyed out. Does anyone know a way of changing the username of this profile?

You cannot change usernames in on demand unfortunately. The suggested workaround is to create a new user and bulk edit the issues to that user. That's far from ideal though, so I would suggest filing a support request before you do anything else. Good luck!
