Is there the ability to hide a custom field even if it is populated?

I would like to add some custom fields to a next-gen project but I don't want them to be displayed in the UI. They should remain hidden even if populated. The field is used for automation purposes and is meaningless to users.

@Jennifer, have you tried to create the field and remove it while keeping it under the removed field list on the right panel under the previously-created field section? Do you need to access/view the field content somehow? If not, it should work.
