Could anyone tell me please if the list of all issue types for Jira - for example to record user needs or map 'traditional' business requirements to user stories?  Clients sometimes need business requirements documents and don't like story formats.  Thanks.

We can't do that, the list is very customisable and different organisations will be using different lists.

Jira Software is the usual system that makes a lot of use of different issue types, and it's worth understanding that the core of that gives you three levels or types of issue-types

  • Epic:  You can only have one type of Epic
  • Issue:  The core issue type in Jira, it's used the word "issue" because it's so generic.  We often run into people wanting to call them "tickets" or "Stories", but those words are terrible because they're not generic enough to describe - for a start, they are absolutely not interchangeable terms - a ticket is not a type of story, and a story is not a type of ticket.  But both could be an issue type.
  • Anyway, people often see issue types called things like Story, Task, Bug, Defect, but looking at just one of our systems, Enhancement, Improvement, Investigation, Holiday and Sickness.  You're free to call your issue types things like Alice, Bob, Cthulhu, Penguin, Slartibartfast - whatever works well for you.

Sub-task: You can, again, have lots of different types with different names.

We can't give you a list of every issue type people might have created!

You'll need to ask your admins or system owners what they've created, and why!
