Hide None value fields

vasileios.ntelopoulos July 5, 2023

When a field is empty and has the default value "None", I want it to be hidden. But if it is populated I want it to be shown under "Description fields". Is that possible?

Hi @vasileios.ntelopoulos

You can hide it if it's empty, but if they're filled in, they're visible in the Details group, as explained here.

To hide go to Project Settings > Request Types > Choose Request.
Then go to "Issue View" and scroll down to "Hidden when empty fields"
Choose the fields you want to hide and drag.

I hope it helps!

I am having this issue as well. There is no information entered into the field but it shows up on Issue View with the grayed out 'None'.

Were you able to get this resolved?

Thank you

I was able to figure it out.

  • Go to Request Types
  • Go to Issue View tab
  • Click the 3 dots to the right of the field you want hidden
  • Select 'Hidden when empty fields' option
  • Click 'Save Changes' at bottom of the screen
  • Verify by going to an issue that had the fields showing prior to the change.

Hey @vasileios.ntelopoulos

I am a product manager on Jira Issue View. I'm looking at hidden when empty behaviour for the issue view and would love to chat about your use case. If you are able to book a time in my calender for a quick 30 min session that would be great.

Thanks,

@vasileios.ntelopoulosI have a similar use case if you are still looking for feedback.

My use case:

I have a custom field called "Closed By" which is populated when the ticket is closed. I want to display this to the Reporter only when it is not empty. It is not a field that the Reporter should see when creating a request.

I also have a Custom Form with the appropriate fields that I want to show to the Reporter.

My problem:

  • If I add the custom field to the Request Type's Request Form, it shows above the Custom Form when they are creating a request.
    • This is frustrating because I have a custom form laid out how I want, but any field I add shows up anyway instead of just showing the form.
  • If I mark it hidden it doesn't show, but it also doesn't "unhide" when it is populated.

Possible Solutions:

  • Similar to the agent's view, the Request Type should have separate Creation and View options to configure for the Reporter's view.
    • The Agent View is already controlled by Screens, so the Request Type configuration should be just how it is displayed to the Reporter. The Request Form and Issue View should control what the Reporter sees, and let the Issue Screens determine what the Agent sees.
  • Alternatively, extend the Hidden options.
    • Hide during creation.
    • Hide until not empty.
  • Alternatively, have an option to override the Reporter's Creation view to show ONLY the custom form if one is attached. (Similar to embedding a form on "any Atlassian site").
  • Alternatively, for custom forms set the "Create Shareable Link" option to be able to be completed by non-agents.
    • If we could create a public link, then we could add this as an external resource and display it in the portal topics as just the form instead of using the Request Type Form.

Hi @vasileios.ntelopoulos

That is not possible with out-of-the-box features of Jira, and there are several suggestions related to improving the display of empty fields.  Some of these have work-arounds to try updating the site banner, although that does not appear to always work for some browsers.

Kind regards,
Bill
