Cannot change Reporter field on an issue in one project

Hunter Lardy October 28, 2024

We have a company-managed project that does not allow me to edit the Reporter field for any issues in the project.

I am in the site-admin Atlassian group, and also assigned the Project Role - Administrators for this project.

This project uses a Permissions scheme. The Modify Reporter permission is allowed for Project Role - Administrators.

@Evgenii @Trudy Claspill @Kseniia Trushnikova

Good morning. After some coffee and a pair of fresh eyes on this issue, I have found the solution.

I was too tunnel-visioned on the Reporter field at first. I didn't recognize that I couldn't edit ANY of the fields in the issues of projects using the same permission scheme.

I took another look at the Cog > Issues > Permission scheme > [scheme for this project].

Under Issue permissions > Edit issues: the Administrator Project Role was missing. Leaving only Project Team (I didn't add myself to that role, as I don't actually do work in the project) and some other Atlassian Groups.

Since I wasn't able to edit issues, I also wasn't able to modify the Reporter.

I very much appreciate the interactions on this post. As a relatively new admin, it's nice having a problem to solve, rather than reading trainings and whatnot all day.

Hey @Hunter Lardy,

The permission helper can help here to find out why you don't have the Modify Reporter permission. You can find it in Settings > System > Permission helper:

Hi @Kseniia Trushnikova

Attached is my Permission Helper output.

This output mirrors another Jira admin who can make the change to the Reporter field.

Hmm, looks fine.

Are there any status properties in the project workflow by any chance? https://support.atlassian.com/jira-cloud-administration/docs/use-workflow-properties/

Thanks for this suggestion, @Kseniia Trushnikova . While this wasn't the issue in the end, I didn't learn more about how these workflow items are interacting with each other.

It was easiest to just export the XML for each workflow in the project and ctrl+f in Notepad to find the jira.issue.editable property (which did exist when an issue is in the Archive state.

Hi, @Hunter Lardy

I see, that you tried solutions, suggested by @Trudy Claspill and @Kseniia Trushnikova and they show that your user has all necessary permissions.

In that case you can also try to check issue screens. It looks like, that on your "View Screen" there is no "Reporter" field, and that's why you can't edit it.

Jira shows it in any case, it's system, no matter you added it on screen or no. But if it's not on screen - editing is prohibited.

Hello @Hunter Lardy

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

Is it a Software, Work Management, or Service Management project?

What happens when you try to edit the field? Are you able to put focus into the field at all? Example:

Good afternoon Trudy.

This is Jira Software.

When I attempt to edit the field, I hover over the user's name and a pop-up info box appears saying "Reporter can't be edited".

We do have another admin who was more involved with this Jira instance that can change the Reporter field. He seems to have the same Project Role that I do on this project in question.

We have 4 projects using this permission scheme. I am unable to change the Reporter field on any of these projects.

I am able to change the Reporter field on other projects utilizing a different permission scheme.

I see that you tried the Permission Helper as suggested by @Kseniia Trushnikova .

I concur with their next suggestion about checking the Properties for the associated workflow for the current Status of the issue.
