Can you create a child task that's attached to a parent but shows directly in the Sprint under tasks rather than embedded in the parent task?

Hello @Melinda Janosko

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

Given that you post information says your product plan is Standard, is it correct to assume that you are talking about creating child subtasks under a standard level issue?

If so, then no, the subtask cannot be assigned to/seen separately from the parent task in the Backlog screen for a sprint.

Subtasks are considered integral to completion of the parent issue, and are not able to be associated to sprints separately from their parent issue. They are assigned to whatever sprint(s) the parent issue assigned. Subtasks also cannot be Ranked separately from their parent issue. For these reasons in the Backlog screen the subtasks are locked to their parent issue and display as an expandable/collapsable list under their parent.

How Subtasks display in the Board view depends on whether you are working with a Team Managed project or a Company Managed project.

I am working with a team managed project.  Am I able to see the child tasks separately in a sprint on the board given I'm working with a team managed project?

In a Team Managed project Sprint board, to see the subtasks as cards you need to

1. Set the Group By option to Subtask

2. Then each issue that has subtasks becomes a swimlane. Issues that don't have subtasks are in the Everything Else lane at the bottom.

3. Then cards will display for each subtask.

It isn't possible display both the parent issue and subtasks as cards on the board at the same time.
