I have created a "PTO Request" issue type and have included a user picker field on the form which will be used to specify the requestor's manager. I would like to set the workflow up so that when the issue is created, it is automatically assigned to the manager specified in the user picker field so they can be notified and either approve/decline the request.
Is there a way to auto-assign an issue to the user specified in a "user picker" field?
You can do this with the plugin 'JIRA Suite Utilities', which comes with OnDemand, but you have to enable it.
Once you have this plugin enabled, you can go to the 'create issue' transition in the workflow you want to modify and add a post function. When you create the post function, choose 'Copy Value From Other Field' . In 'Source Field' you choose the field that holds the requestor's manager and in the 'Destination Field', you choose 'Assignee'.
The order of the post function may affect the functionality.

We use this function, and our employees use the Customer Portal to enter their request. Works great. Some of our employees do not see the list of users to pick from in their browser session of customer portal, but most do. Are you aware of any special browser settings to consistently use the field as a "type-ahead"?
This is generally because they don't have the 'Browse Users' global permission. You can press g+g in you JIRA and enter 'Global Permissions', selecting it when it appears. There you search for the 'Browse Users' permission and see which groups have it. Make sure your users belong to at least of of these groups (you can add other groups to the permission if necessary).
