Subtasks appearing on the Sprint Backlog

Mark Dallas July 10, 2023

Hi,

I am currently having trouble getting Subtasks to show up on the Sprint backlog. Is this something that I can change?

Thanks!

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

No, sub-tasks are of no use in the backlog because they're not sprint items, they are part of their parent issue.  You don't estimate on them, or rank them outside the issue of which they are a fragment, so there's no point in seeing them in the backlog - you can't do anything useful with them, and they don't contribute towards your sprint calculations.

You can enable a "sub-tasks" field in the backlog, which will then show you a list of them under each parent, but as there's no estimates or ranking, there's not a lot of point in doing that - it's not going to help you with your sprint planning.

Nic,

Thanks for the response. So If I add hours to the subtasks they will not calculate towards the Sprint total? To get them to calculate in the sprint we would need to add the hours to a parent ticket, correct?

Thanks

That is correct - a (sprint) estimate on a sub-task will be ignored by the sprint reports because they're not sprit items.
