Points across projects/development teams / Products Affected on a Dashboard

Jonathon Dameron June 27, 2024

I am looking for an app that provides dashboard widgets that allow me to see story point (custom field for us) rollups across product teams, development teams, and using standard options like products affected.

I'm working hard to show our organization (specifically a cross-functional product effort) how many points we have currently slated by the above and preferably also by Fixed Version (Which we are using to define quarters).

I have a few good dashboards (no plug ins) however they are limiting me to only see #of issues...

I can imagine this is a problem several of us have...but need some clarity on WHICH APP plug in works BEST for my "Problem".

Sincerely,

Make Points Visible on a Dashboard (a.k.a. Jonathon)

Hi @Jonathon Dameron & welcome to the community,

When I read topic, the first thing that comes to mind is, that from an Agile point of view no teams are alike, thus teams will have different opinions on what a story point is. One team can handle 200 story points of work per sprint, another 'only' 50. In reality they can have moved the same amount of work.

So what is the point of accumulating the story points?

Great Call out.  The goal is to see points needed to complete (scope) and points we have left by quarter and by milestone (Capacity / Velocity).  Not worried about the disparity between teams...treating it as a singular project output...  Kind of Old School...but that's where we are :)

Hi @Jonathon Dameron,

Have a look over our Great Gadgets app. It offers many helpful gadgets for your case.

It offers sprint & release burndown / burnup gadgets and velocity gadgets that work cross-teams or cross-projects. These gadgets can calculate by custom fields (as in your case), story points or time estimates, etc.

Very helpful for you can be the Pivot Table & Pivot Chart gadget offered by the same app, which allows you to generate multi-field statistics with no. of issues, percentages, sum of story points, etc split by department, teams or projects.

This app gives advanced analytics. See more details and examples in these articles:

You could start with 1-moth free trial. But my advice would be to also contact our Support Team at support@stonikbyte.com and schedule a call to discuss your needs in more details; they will give you the full solution.

Hope this helps.

Danut.

Hi Jonathon,

I understand your need for a more detailed and flexible way to visualize story point rollups across various dimensions such as product teams, development teams, products affected, and Fixed Versions. Here are a few app plugins that might solve your problem effectively:

1. Jira Software by Atlassian

While not a plugin, Jira Software offers powerful native dashboard gadgets like the Two Dimensional Filter Statistics Gadget and Created vs Resolved Gadget, which can be configured to display story points instead of issue counts. Additionally, you can use Jira Query Language (JQL) to create filters that aggregate story points by different fields, including custom fields.

2. EazyBI Reports and Charts for Jira

EazyBI is a robust business intelligence tool that integrates seamlessly with Jira. It allows for complex data analysis and visualization, including custom fields like story points. You can create advanced reports and dashboards that aggregate story points by product teams, development teams, products affected, and Fixed Versions.

3. Custom Charts for Jira

Custom Charts is a highly customizable plugin that enables you to create charts and dashboards tailored to your needs. It supports various field types, including custom fields like story points, and allows you to visualize data across multiple dimensions.

4. Arsenale Dataplane Reports and Analytics for Jira

Arsenale Dataplane is another powerful reporting tool that offers a wide range of customizable reports. It’s designed for Jira power users who need advanced reporting capabilities and can handle story point rollups by different categories effectively.

5. Structure for Jira

Structure by ALM Works helps you build hierarchies of Jira issues. You can roll up story points across various levels and dimensions. This is particularly useful for visualizing data across cross-functional teams and product efforts.

Recommendations:

  1. EazyBI Reports and Charts for Jira: Highly recommended for its powerful reporting and data visualization capabilities.
  2. Custom Charts for Jira: Great for creating visually appealing and customizable charts.
  3. Structure for Jira: Best for hierarchical data rollups and complex project structures.

Setting Up:

  1. Install the plugin from the Atlassian Marketplace.
  2. Configure the plugin by connecting it to your Jira instance and setting up the required permissions.
  3. Create your reports or dashboards using the plugin’s interface. Customize them to include story points and the desired dimensions (e.g., product teams, development teams, Fixed Versions).
  4. Add the reports to your Jira dashboard so that they are visible to your stakeholders.

Example Configuration for EazyBI:

  1. Create a new report in EazyBI.
  2. Select the "Pages" section to filter by Fixed Versions.
  3. Add dimensions for product teams and development teams.
  4. Drag the "Story Points" field into the report for rollup.
  5. Customize the chart type (e.g., bar chart, pie chart) to visualize the data effectively.

These tools should provide you with the flexibility and clarity you need to showcase story points across your organization effectively.

Best regards,

Prof.Sagar Zilpe
