I feel the uncertainty with some users is not the fact it happens but more for the "unexpected" changed behaviour. In other words more of the "why".

For posterity ... there is a document which I recommend to bookmark. It outlines the changes happening in Cloud products (not the big things that are also explained by Webinars and Videos on YouTube) but the small changes that can confuse (...the most).

I found the here discusses with following information:

Find issues in your project even faster with the new Status Category quick filter. Filter by status category—To do, In progress, or Done—along with the existing quick filters for Assignee, Status, and Type. Select Show full list to view the list of available options under these quick filters. Unhappy with your search results? Select Reset to clear your search criteria.

I never noticed what this standard filter was like previously, but it makes sense that it would be basing these on Status Category.

Statuses can have any sort of text as a value, but each Status must be assigned to one of the following Status Categories:

- To Do

- In Progres

- Done

It would not be possible for JIRA to provide a standard filter for displaying the Done issues based on the Status value. Every JIRA instance can have 1..n Statuses that represent Done with a wide variety of names. The only way JIRA can provide a standard filter is to base that filter on information it controls - specifically, the Status Category names.

This is a new field that has been added to the Standard filter to help with better defining the results. You don't have to use the new field - you can still just use the Status field to see an individual status like Done.
