Migrate tasks from one project account to another

Nicholas Gilbert December 1, 2020

Hello, I have been working with a development team who setup a project for us to add tasks for project development.

We are no longer working with this company so we are looking to setup our own Jira account and project to copy the tasks across to there.

We would like to copy everything in the kanban, boards and backlog.

Does anyone know if there is an easy way to copy all task data to our newly created account and project?

Hello @NCEE Rybarczyk,

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

It actually changed! It's now possible to move single projects from one Cloud instance to another, but for now, it's available only for Jira Software and Jira Work Management projects. For Jira Service Management it's only possible to move from Server/Data Center to Cloud, but not Cloud to Cloud.

You can find the details on the description of the ticket below:

Thank you, Angelica!   How can we tell if our Jira project is Jira Software, or Jira Work Management, or Jira Service Management? We don't see those terms referenced on our account.

Specifically, we need to move a project called NCEE-DTS from integ-ro.atlassian.net/jira (Jira Cloud).  We want to move it to ncee-org.atlassian.net/jira (also Jira Cloud).

Will this method that you sent work for this purpose?

Thank you for your prompt support.

Hi @NISL Rybarczyk,

By going to Cog icon > Projects you will be able to view the type of the projects and if it's team-managed or company-managed.

To move the projects from one site to another, you need to go to Cog icon > System > Migrate cloud site.

If the NCEE-DTS doesn't show on the list to migrate, it means that it's not a supported type.

Angélica

Hello @Nicholas Gilbert,

Welcome to Atlassian Community!

It's possible to migrate an entire site to another or only import the tickets. Currently, it's not possible to export and import a single project.

With this said, you can create a full backup on the site that has the project you need and migrate it to your new site and after that, delete other projects, fields, and anything that won't be useful for your new site:

If you only need the tickets, you can export a CSV file and import on the new site:

Hope this helps!

If you have any other questions regarding this matter, please let us know.

Regards,
Angélica

Has this changed since Dec 2020?  We need to export a full project (just one project) from one account to another account.  Exporting projects is a basic function that many organizations need to do routinely when they change providers. So it's not impressive if Jira doesn't have a project export or move project feature by now.  Full systems backup is a crazy way to handle this requirement. The source organization has many projects unrelated to the one we need to move.
