Limiting Scrum board transitions through permissions

Currently we're using JIRA Agile with simplified workflows.

It seems that the only way to limit which users can move issues to certain stauses in the scrum board is to manually edit the workflow (Which JIRA tells you not to do!) and add conditions to each of the status transitions where necessary.

Is there a way to do this which JIRA Agile supports?

To be clear, I want to be able to select certain users and say that only those users are able to move an issue into a certain column on the scrum board.

As a follow-up, I've tried the same on a test board and found out that manually editing the workflow for a simplified scrum board DOES work fine.

The problem was related specfically to my changing the name of a transition, so it did not match the name of the transition in the scrum board configuration.

However my final question still stands: Does JIRA Agile have its own method of limiting who can move issues between columns?
