Jira Automation: When Epic created, create a task and link that to said Epic - Sporadic success

Crispin May 24, 2023

I have two projects: CUS (Real one) and CPT (My Test one).

I have a rule which, when epic is created, it creates a task and then links that task to the epic.

In my CUS project, this does not work. Task is created but no epic-linking.

In CPT it works perfectly.

I'm really lost with this.

  • Yes, these are custom issues. Same thing happens when I use normal Tasks or Stories
  • Is there something at a project level which would stop this?
  • Logs show no difference in execution
  • the "orphaned" task allows me to link the epic manually so it's not a data conflict as such.

The left hand one works, the right does now.

Hi Crispin - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

In the Epic Link update field for Set value, type:

{{triggerIssue.key}}

Be sure to click on what you typed so it will actually stick it in the field.

That should work for you.

thanks John. That did work.

Any thoughts why it would not have worked the other way?

Because you were copying from the Issue (the child itself) and not the Trigger Issue (the Epic).

but it worked in another test project. That's the confusing part.

Because it might have been the same project.

Hi @Crispin ,

This is strange.

And when you use "Copy from Triggerissue" , is this working on both rules?

Or

{{triggerissue.key}}
in field 'Epic Link'.

Regards, Marco

Thanks Marco - that did work. Very odd though.
