How to add automation rule that sends notification on burn down chart to an email

Mithra Upadrasta, AnilKumar March 28, 2024

We have a lot of gadgets under a dashboard in which the Burn Down chart is one. Also, JIRA has given us the flexibility to write custom JQL and create our charts under a dashboard.

I am looking for functionality or a possibility that can trigger an email of a burn-down chart every day or the left over tasks in the sprint daily in the form of a bar graph.

Is this possible? with or without external plug-IN

Hi @Mithra Upadrasta, AnilKumar

Not natively; Automation Rules can't send burndown charts.

You could send a list of open issues, or three lists of issues split via Status Category? But not in a graph form.

If the aim is to share this information with external users (i.e not in Jira) - you might be able to do this with Dashboard/External Share Apps like...

---

If not, I agree with Bill - it'd be good to understand the need here in more detail.

Hi @Mithra Upadrasta, AnilKumar -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

What is the problem you are trying to solve?  That is, "why" do this?  Knowing that may help the community to offer better suggestions.

Until we know that...

With the built-in features of automation rules, I do not believe you could include an image of a chart generated from inside of Jira.  You could send a link to a dashboard / report page, such as the burn charts.  You could also investigate the Atlassian Marketplace for any similar types of reporting.

Again, without knowing the specifics of your scenario, it may be possible to build a text-based, vertical bar chart using an automation rule to summarize and visualize data.

Kind regards,
Bill

So basically, we try to send the list of pending items per assignee in the form of bar graph on daily basis.

This graph shows the list of items which are yet to be finished, i have it as a gadget in my dashboard and i do it manually.

It will be great, if i can schedule this on daily basis so that it can shoot in the form of an email to a list of people. I hope my requirement is clear :)

Thanks for that information, and please see my first post for alternatives: marketplace addon or text-based chart created by an automation rule.

Yet, I am still puzzled by what you are doing...

You mention a burn chart, and so I assume your team is using Scrum practices.  If using Scrum practices, why wouldn't the team conversation during the daily stand-up replace the need for such a chart?  Who is the audience for the chart?

Hi, Thanks for the reply.

Your understanding is correct. We are into Scrum practice.

There are dashboards that are available under the project that I am working for.

Few folks from the C-Level wanted to have a regular update on the burn down chart and they do not like logging into JIRA for that.

To justify their request, i was searching for an option from JIRA, where Burn down chart or any gadget that we generally add under a dashboard, if can be sent in the form of an email on a daily basis (more like a scheduled one) , it will be very helpful.
