Can I create a custom field for just one issue type?

I am looking to create custom fields for just the story issue type.

How can this be done?

HI Maura - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Sure, you can do that. 

Created your custom field - go to Settings > Issues > Custom Fields

After the field has been created, you will need to do a search for the field, and then in the 3 dots menu to the right, select Contexts and Default value.

There you can edit the context to select a single project at the bottom.

OK - I do not have Admin rights so I am not seeing that. Thank you!

Yes, you must be a Jira admin to be able to create and modify custom fields.

Are you working with a Company Managed project or a Team Managed project? It will say at the bottom of the navigation pane on the left.

The method for managing custom fields depends on the type of project.
