Can I connect tasks between projects?

So far I've created separate boards for website buildout, marketing content managment, marketing and membership, etc. Often I need to connect a task between two projects, or drag a task from one project to the next. Is that possible? Is there another way of accomplishing something similar?

Hi @Jacqueline Sowell_ PMP

It depends on the need.

In simple terms, you can create a link between 2 issues using Link Issues:

  • Go to an Issue
  • Select Link Issue near the top of the page
  • Choose a link type, then search/select the issue to link to

You can edit the link types on your instance as needed - see this help page for more information on this.

---

You can "move" issues between Projects - to do this...

  • Go to an Issue
  • Select the breadcrumbs (...) in the upper-right corner
  • Select Move, and follow the steps

...but I'd query whether your Projects have the best setup in that instance. You might want to consider changing the definition of your "Jira Project" if Tasks are moving between Projects to be closed, so they can all be in one Project from creation to completion.

---

If there's another reason Tasks need to move between Projects, you could also automate it using Automation

For example, if a Task closing in one Project should create another Task somewhere else, the rule might be:

  • Trigger: Issue Transitioned
    • To Status = Done
  • Action: Clone Issue

Just be mindful of execution limits when using this approach, given you're on a Free instance. You can view how these limits work on this page.
