copy field value to a custom field

I have a custom field called requester's email. I use this in all of my Jira projects and made it available to my Jira Service Desk so when I move a ticket out of service desk into Jira Software I have it already filled in.

When using the widget it captures the reporter as an email address. test_user@email.com

I want to copy that from reporter to my custom field requester's email, but I haven't found the right automation or the best way to do it within a workflow.

Any suggestions?

Hi @Raoul Kaiser

You could either use an automation from within your workflow, or with jira automation.

For the workflow

  • Edit your workflow
  • Choose the transition in which you want to copy to this value to the other
  • Add a post function "Copy Value From Other Field"
  • Choose your fields
  • Publish your workflow

For the jira automation

  • Go to project settings
  • Go to automation
  • Create new rule
  • Trigger: Field value change -> Choose the field from which we need to copy the value
  • New action: Edit Issue
    • Choose the field which you want to copy the value to
    • Click "..." and choose Copy From
    • Choose from the "Field to copy value from" the field from which you want to copy the value from.

Hope the above helps!

Thanks Alex for the walk through. I will give it a try.

Good! Let me know if you need any further help.

The workflow didn't work. Reporter came across almost like a hexadecimal db address instead of customer name. I still need to look at the jira automation because I keep missing the actual field value change since it is not technically changing it is just never populated.

Hi @Raoul Kaiser

Please try the following via Jira Automation (given the fact that you want to capture the value via transition):

I've tested it and it was successful. You shouldn't have any problem with it.

@shankara vijayendran hi,

Better to create a new question :)

@Alex Koxaras _Relational_ I followed your instructions, but it's not clear what the last step should be? I have here the options for "SET" and "COPY" and neither are clear that it's going to copy the "Author" value to "Assignee".

Has anyone tried this with a date field?  I'm trying to consolidate two fields. I want to do the following:

Where Due date is blank, copy the contents of the Due Date field.

any tips?

Hello all,

Found the answer for copying customer value

copy customer value.png

Hi @Raoul Kaiser

Will the workflow method work for the same field "customer"

I wanted it to copy from parent task to subtask

But its not working

workflow for customer.pngticket.png

I had to use jira automation for my issue. The workflow changes didn't really work for me.

Hello @Alex Koxaras _Relational_ ,

Greetings

When user creating a subtask the value from the parent task should auto populate in the field name "customer"

The value of customer For eg: customer name ABC should be the same for both Parent and subtask

Hope you understood my question
Have a nice day
