Create a custom rule

Ian Ball June 3, 2024

The steps in this article say to create a custom rule but I do not see that option.

Create an automation rule to prioritize your incidents | Jira Service Management Cloud | Atlassian Support

Hi @Ian Ball and welcome to the Community!

That support article is very much outdated and refers to the legacy automation. You should just hit Create Rule and follow more or less the same steps then.

  • Trigger: still issue created
  • Use If ... Else If ... conditions to determine the various scenarious
  • Use the edit issue action to update the priorities based on the options from the impact/urgency matrix you configured

Hope this helps!

Hello @Ian Ball

I think this article may be based on an older UI for Jira Automation. If you go to project Settings -> Automation and hit this button:

If you end up here, you are in the right place.

Hi Christian,

Thank you for responding and including screen shots. Follow up question is there a way to prompt Atlassian to update the article with proper steps?

@Ian Ball -

Welcome to the community.   I believe the reference page is for the Legacy Automation Rule setup.  In the current Automation Rule component, you will not have the option named "Custom rule", since all the rules are essentially custom.

Hope this makes sense.

Hi @Ian Ball ,

The documentation you're looking at seems to still be refering to the old "Legacy Automation"

There you do see the "add rule" and "add custome rule" option.

However in the new "Automation" it will just be under Rules -> Create Rule

Hi @Ian Ball

I think it's just a basic jira automation rule.  Trigger/Condition/Action.  Looks like the documentation is not up to date.

Regards,

Fabian
