Is it possible to add a custom icon to the list of icon choices for the issue types displayed on the customer portal in service desk? How?
If you're referring to Issue Types and not Request Types, then you can upload Issue Type icons just like in regular JIRA through Administration > Issues > Issue Types > Edit > Select Image > Browse

Actually, currently there is no way to upload your own icons, just the system ones.
However, we already have a feature request in order to allow this in the feature which is tracked on the issue below:
