Ideas are not sorting by defined sort

peggy_rattarree February 7, 2025

We have four attributes (Domain, Module, Feature, Summary).  Many of our views are grouped by Domain with a sort defined of Module then Feature then summary.  However, I am finding that the sort is not consistent.   I have one view that sorts modules from A down to R but then appears to go backwards.  Example:

it shows in this order...

....

Patient Chart

Post Death

QA Queue

Referral

Patient List

Hope

... and then it's impossible to tell how it is attempting to sort.

If Sort is supposed to override rank, it does not appear to be doing that (assuming rank means I explicitly drag an item ahead of another one)

Am I missing a key note about sorting?  I'm just very confused.

Hi @peggy_rattarree , by the way the sort is not alphabetical: it's based on how the field options are ranked in the field configuration (in case that plays into this). You could raise a support ticket, or send us a Loom via the in-app option to send feedback to the JPD product team.

This addressed my issue.  In case others review this question, I fixed two things:

1) I adjusted the sorting in the selection field (to your point, it does not automatically sort alphabetically)

2) some items were attached to 2 domains.  I was sorting by domain AND grouping by domain.  What would happen is that it would sort by domain within the domain grouping  (which actually does make sense...) but that would cause those items with multiple domains to not sort as I would expect.  I removed the sort on domain since I am grouping by that and there is a small number.

Thank you for this answer!

Hi @peggy_rattarree -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Your example appears to show only the Module values.  Are all of those shown in the same Domain value, and grouped together, or are they in different ones?

What type of view are you using: list, board, etc.?

Kind regards,
Bill

Thanks Bill - yes these are all under one domain value and grouped together.  This is a List view.

That is odd, and I do not see that with similar fields: one used for grouping and multiple other fields used for sorting.

I recommend working with your Jira Site Admin to report this symptom to the Atlassian Support team: https://support.atlassian.com/contact/#/

When you hear back from them, please post what you learn to benefit the community.  Thanks!
