ignore markup

How can I type text in a JIRA issue that contains underscores and slashes and curly brackets without it automatically changing text format to italics, etc.?  I need to be able to enter code literally.  Using the preformatted does not work.

As always, I do not know the difference between JIRA core and JIRA software.

Preformatted is just one of the text formatting options.  Try {code} instead - that suppress all the markup inside the box.

JIRA is an issue tracker.  JIRA Software is an application for JIRA that adds a load of functionality aimed at supporting Agile development methodologies.  The main thing you'll see is that it adds the ability to have two types of "Board" for viewing and working with the issues in JIRA in a different way.

You can also escape characters by using a backslash. For example \(
