Epic Link Error message on subtask?

Why do I get this message when creating a subtask on an Epic? I have no problem assigning a subtask to an epic. The message is rather annoying and confusing to explain to other JIRA users.

Because Epics don't have subtasks - subtasks go on the stories within Epics.

But that's just it, i CAN add tasks to Epics! Even though the message says I can't!

So if you can, then how?  Where is the error message happening?  You need to explain both when you get it, and how you think you are adding them to an epic.
