Data Center Users: How well is Atlassian meeting the needs of your organization?

Anyone else get an email from Atlassian with the above title?

It goes on to state " Atlassian's leadership would love to hear about the needs of your organization as a Server/Data Center customer, and understand how well we are meeting these." It then provides a link to a survey.

Well I took the survey. The first few questions asks about some general DC usage/needs. The remainder of the survey is all about what it will take to get you to migrate from DC to Cloud.

Once again Atlassian is feigning interest in supporting DC while, in actuality, they are still trying to push you to Cloud.

Its just so very disappointing.

Oh I can't wait to get that survey. I dare them to send it to me.

Not yet, but as a partner, I'm not sure I will ever be asked.

If they ever do, my answers will include

  • we need our own domains (Cloud-6999)
  • all the stuff DC does that Cloud doesn't is needed (priority schemes and user macros for example)
  • most of the apps we use on server/DC need to be able to be installed on Cloud (That's less up to Atlassian to be fair, probably up to the vendors, but they need to implement the APIs to allow vendors to create the Cloud versions of the apps people want - it's taken years to begin to implement Scriptrunner's Behaviours on Cloud.   I'm still in a place where I'm recommending "stay on DC because you're relying on apps that Cloud can't support yet" to a lot of people)
  • and the rather fundamental one for many of our clients: "we need it to be running on hardware we have full control over, not a third party".  And the slightly less strict "we need to run ALL of it in one region".  Which really does mean "not your Atlassian Cloud"

I clicked through the survey and it seems to be trying to determine if we'd still pick Data Center over Cloud (or move to a different vendor) if they greatly increased the pricing of DC so that it exceeds Cloud. It's things like this that makes users continue to question Atlassian's commitment to DC, as opposed to a survey that actually asked users what features we need out of DC.
